September always feels like two seasons sharing the same kitchen.
Summer isn’t quite finished, but routines are back, apples and pears are showing up at the market, and the first cooler evenings make turning on the oven sound good again.
This is the month for quick weeknight dinners, packable lunches, apple baking, game day food, and the first cozy recipes of the season. I’m also bringing squash back into the kitchen, especially spaghetti squash and butternut squash.

One of my favorite signs of September is seeing the huge hydrangeas at the market alongside the first big displays of apples and pears. That’s when it really starts to feel like the season is changing.

What’s in Season in September
- Fruit: apples, pears, grapes, plums, figs, and late-season peaches.
- Vegetables: butternut squash, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, delicata squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, carrots, peppers, eggplant, green beans, corn, and the last of the summer tomatoes and zucchini.
Five Things I’m Buying on Repeat
- Apples
- Pears
- Spaghetti squash
- Butternut squash
- Potatoes
This is where my shopping basket really starts to look like fall. Apples and pears are for snacking and baking, while squash and potatoes start finding their way into weeknight dinners.

Apple Season Is Here
Before pumpkin takes over, apples deserve their moment. September is the time for apple crisp, apple cake, muffins, pies, and anything involving apples and cinnamon. If you go apple picking, this is also a very good list to come back to when you get home with far more apples than you planned.

Bring Back the Squash
If you’ve been waiting for an excuse to cook with squash again, this is it.
Spaghetti squash is especially handy for easy dinners, while butternut squash works well roasted, in soups and curries, or as a simple fall side.

Pack Something Good for Lunch
Back-to-school and back-to-routine season is a good reminder that lunch doesn’t have to be an afterthought.
Wraps, chicken salad, pasta salad, muffins, and other make-ahead recipes are useful for packed lunches, work lunches, or simply having something ready in the fridge.

Game Day Food Is Back
Football season is back, which means wings, dips, sliders, nachos, and all the good snacky food that comes with it.
These are easy to share, good for feeding a group, and mostly hands-off once the game starts.

Ready for Something a Little Cozier?
September is when I start craving dinners that feel a little warmer without going all-in on heavy fall food yet.
Roasted chicken and potatoes, mushroom rice, creamy stroganoff, saucy chicken dinners, and the first cozy soup of the season all feel just right.

September Food Moments
September has a few food moments worth knowing about, but you don’t need to cook specifically for every one of them.
- Labor Day falls on September 7 in 2026, so it’s a good time for one last cookout. Try Perfect Grilled Burgers, Homemade Hamburger Buns, Red Potato Salad, or Caprese Pasta Salad for an easy long-weekend menu.
- National Cheeseburger Day is September 18, which is a perfect excuse for The Best Smash Burger Recipe, Stove Top Burgers, or Turkey Burgers. If you want to make the whole thing from scratch, add Homemade Hamburger Buns.
- The September equinox falls September 22 or 23 depending on where you are, marking the official start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. That’s when recipes like Cheesy Spaghetti Squash with Spinach, Roasted Butternut Squash Soup, Pumpkin Muffins, and Old Fashioned Apple Crisp really start to feel right.
- National Coffee Day is September 29, so this is a good day for Cinnamon Coffee Cake, Creamy Coffee Overnight Oats, or Baked Coffee Cheesecake.
Before September Ends
Go apple picking if you can. Cook a spaghetti squash. Roast a tray of potatoes or butternut squash. Enjoy the last warm evenings while they’re still here.
And if you’re already craving pumpkin, you don’t have to wait for October. Start with my Pumpkin Marry Me Chicken for dinner or Pumpkin Mac and Cheese when you want something extra cozy.
