Make delicious roasted potatoes without your oven with this easy recipe for Grilled Potatoes in Foil.

This grilled potatoes recipe is perfect for summer BBQs, camping, or as a delicious side dish with a weeknight dinner.

three foil packets filled with new potatoes cut in half and roasted.

This recipe for Grilled potatoes in foil packets is the best way to cook potatoes in the summertime! These potatoes cook entirely on the grill, so there’s no need to boil water or heat up your oven.

Potatoes in foil also make an excellent side dish for camping, and I’ll even give you some tips about how you can cook these over a camp fire!

These tasty baby potatoes can be seasoned however you like, and will make a wonderful side dish for BBQ meals like burgers, grilled chicken, or a couple of perfectly grilled steaks.

Perfectly Grilled Potatoes in Foil

  1. Tender Baby Potatoes – Called baby potatoes in the US, and “new potatoes” most everywhere else, these tiny potatoes are perfect for roasting on the grill. They cook up tender and delicious, with crispy brown edges, and way more quickly than whole baking potatoes would.
  2. Simple Seasoning – One of the great things about potatoes is that you can season them in infinite ways! Here I’m using a simple mix of Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper, but you can feel free to add other spices if you like.
  3. Easy Cooking Method – Foil pack cooking is a really fun and easy way to cook food on the grill or over a well-prepared camp fire. Simply add all of the ingredients to some foil, wrap it up, and cook! When you open the foil you’ll be thrilled at how perfectly cooked these potatoes are.

Ingredients In Foil Packet Potatoes

Here’s what you need to make this easy summer side dish:

a bowl of baby potatoes next to small bowls of salt, pepper, italian seasoning, and olive oil.

Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Baby Potatoes: Make this recipe with any type of small new potatoes. Red potatoes, yellow potatoes, or even baby purple potatoes! Wash the potatoes well, there’s no need to peel them.
  • Olive Oil: Regular olive oil (not extra virgin olive oil) is the best option for roasting potatoes in foil. In a pinch you could also use avocado oil or canola oil.
  • Seasonings: Kosher salt, ground black pepper, and my homemade Italian seasoning give these potatoes good flavor without overly seasoning them.

That’s it! You’ll also want to have some aluminum foil, enough to make 3 packets for the potatoes to cook in.

4. Seal. Fold the foil over the potatoes and crimp all of the edges to seal them inside of the packets.

Tip!

Other Seasoning Options: Try these with Cajun seasoning, Old Bay Seasoning, or ranch seasoning to give them a different flavor!

5. Cook on the Grill: Add the foil packets to a preheated grill. Cook for 30-40 minutes, turning occasionally, until fork-tender.

6. Serve: Carefully open the foil packets as the steam will be very hot. Serve, topped with sour cream and chives or chopped fresh herbs if you like!

Recipe Tips

  • For even cooking, cut each potato in half, and quarter any extra large ones so that everything is relatively the same size.
  • Use any type of grill! This recipe works for making roasted potatoes on a gas grill or grilling potatoes on a charcoal grill. If you are cooking over a camp fire, be sure that you’re cooking over coals rather than flames, and set the foil packs on a rack a few inches above the coals.
  • On the grill, it’s best to cook these packets over direct heat.
  • Check for doneness. After 30 minutes, you can carefully unwrap one of the packets and test for doneness with a fork. I recommend wearing oven or grilling gloves so that you don’t burn yourself with steam.
  • Add Veggies: For extra flavor, add some sliced onion or diced bell peppers to each potato foil packet.

Storing Tips

Try to enjoy your grilled potatoes shortly after cooking them. Freshly roasted potatoes have the best texture.

If you have leftovers, store them in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The potatoes can be reheated in the microwave (without the foil!) or put back into foil packs and reheated on the grill.

Toppings for Grilled Potatoes in Foil

Once your potatoes come off of the grill, you can serve them as is, or you can treat them like baked potatoes and load them up with yummy toppings!

Try sour cream, shredded cheese, and bacon bits for a classic option.

Or get creative and top your foil grilled potatoes with taco meat and salsa, marinara sauce and mozzarella, or grilled veggies.

Recipe FAQs

What kind of potato can I use in this recipe?

Your best option will be baby potatoes, also known as new potatoes. These tiny potatoes are easy to prepare and cook quickly. You can also use large potatoes, cut into rounds. This works well with Yukon Gold potatoes and Russet Potatoes.

Do you poke holes in aluminum foil when grilling potatoes?

Nope! In fact, you should avoid poking holes in the foil. Any holes or openings in the foil packet will allow steam to escape, and we want it to stay inside so that it cooks the potatoes all the way through.

Should I boil potatoes before grilling?

Using this method of grilling potatoes on the grill in foil, you will not need to boil the potatoes first. The small potatoes will cook fully in their packets.

How long to grill potatoes on foil?

It will take 30-40 minutes to grill baby potatoes that have been cut in half inside of foil packets on an outdoor grill that’s been preheated to Medium.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds (900 g) baby potatoes or new potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons (45 ml) olive oil
  • 4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning optional, or use your favorite seasoning blend.

Instructions

  • Preheat your grill to medium heat.
  • In a large bowl, toss the baby potatoes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning.
  • Divide the potatoes into three equal portions. Place each portion in the center of a large piece of aluminum foil. Fold the foil over the potatoes and seal the edges tightly to create packets.
  • Place the foil packets on the preheated grill. Cook for 30-40 minutes, turning occasionally, until the potatoes are tender. Check for doneness by piercing with a fork.
  • Carefully open the foil packets (watch out for steam). Serve hot, optionally topped with sour cream and chives.

Notes:

  • For even cooking, cut each potato in half, and quarter any extra large ones so that everything is relatively the same size.
  • Instead of baby potatoes, you can make this recipe with full-sized potatoes, cut into rounds.
  • Use any type of grill! This recipe works for making roasted potatoes on a gas grill or grilling potatoes on a charcoal grill.
  • To cook over a camp fire: Be sure that you’re cooking over hot coals rather than flames, and set the foil packs on a rack a few inches above the coals.
  • Adjust the seasoning. Instead of Italian seasoning, try Cajun seasoning, ranch seasoning, or any spices that you enjoy.
  • Check for doneness. After 30 minutes, you can carefully unwrap one of the packets and test for doneness with a fork. I recommend wearing oven or grilling gloves so that you don’t burn yourself with steam.
  • Add Veggies: For extra flavor, add some sliced onion, or diced bell pepper to each potato foil packet.
