Best Homemade Pancake Recipe
Everyone needs a good basic pancake recipe because pancakes are so easy to make, and what’s breakfast without fluffy pancakes?
Pancake mixes are great, and I buy them from time to time. But honestly, pancakes are SO easy to make from scratch and in this recipe, I will show you how to make the BEST pancakes ever!
The Ingredients
To make homemade pancakes, you will need:
- Flour – all-purpose flour works best here.
- Baking powder – the secret behind super fluffy pancakes!
- Granulated sugar – my recipe uses just 2 tablespoons of sugar, so they’re not too sweet or anything. Sweeten your pancakes with toppings and syrup rather than sugar!
- Milk and egg – use whole milk that is slightly warm but not hot.
- Butter – unsalted melted butter. Melt butter in the microwave in 20 seconds, 10-second intervals.
- Salt, and pure vanilla extract.
How to Make Pancakes
- In a bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, sugar, salt).
- In another bowl whisk the egg with milk and melted butter. Add vanilla extract.
- Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and whisk lightly until just combined and remove big lumps (DO NOT overmix the batter, if you do then you’ll get flat and tough pancakes).
- Lightly brush a skillet with a piece of butter (or use 1 tablespoon of oil instead). Then using a ¼ measuring cup spoon the batter and spread it into a circle.
- Cook on the first side until bubbles appear and the edges start to look a bit dry, the bottom of the pancakes should be golden-brown (around 3 minutes). Flip and cook for another 3 minutes or until the second sides are golden brown.
- Drizzle with maple or pancake syrup, add your toppings and serve.
Storing and Freezing
If you have leftovers, store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Pancakes also freeze very well, to freeze lay them between pieces of parchment paper, and freeze in a ziploc bag for up to 3 months. To reheat, just pop them in the microwave until they’re warmed up.
Topping Ideas
- Fresh fruit such as berries, sliced banana, sliced peach.
- Maple syrup or pancake syrup.
- Chocolate or caramel syrup.
- Homemade strawberry sauce.
- Butter.
- Whipped cream.
- Peanut butter or almond butter.
- Homemade nutella.

Love this recipe. I was low of box pancake mix and decide look for a homemade recipes to make cuz I wanted pancakes. I came across this and I was a little skeptical cuz the batter came out so thick and I used all my vanilla last night so I didn’t add any in. However I added strawberries on top and they taste like it came from IHOP, I will never buy boxed mix again. Thanks

I made these pancakes today for Valentines Day and they turned out so good! For years we have always done the pre-mix when making pancakes. I don’t know why now considering how quick and easy these are to make. They are so much better tasting and so much better without all the added extras that aren’t needed. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe. It’s a keeper:) Happy Valentines Day!

Hi Melissa, I’m glad that you liked the recipe! You’re right, there is no point in buying a pre mix that is made from not-so-good-for-you ingredients when you can make your own, especially that they’re so easy to make! 🙂
