If you have a waffle iron, waffles are very easy to make. I will show you how to make delicious waffles whether you want to make them sweet to serve for breakfast, or savory to enjoy with crispy fried chicken. These are American waffles that bake crispy, fluffy, and tall.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Easy Recipe – Skip buying frozen waffles that are reheated in the toaster, and make a batch of these homemade waffles instead. It’s so easy!
- American Style Waffles – Unlike American and Brussels style waffles, this recipe does not use yeast as a leavener. These waffles are leavened with baking powder and soda, which makes it a quick recipe.
- Sweet or Savory – I’m giving you instructions on how to make sweet or savory waffles. These are perfect to be served for breakfast with a drizzle of maple syrup, or made savory to be served with crispy fried chicken!
Key Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make superior homemade waffles:
Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
- Buttermilk: You might be wondering if using buttermilk is a must? I will answer your question. Buttermilk contains acid that activates the baking soda to make fluffier waffles, it also adds a little acidic flavor to the waffles. I also noticed that buttermilk creates firmer and thicker waffles, but if you need to substitute it with something else, this recipe works with whole milk and half a teaspoon of lemon juice.
- Flour: We’re using all purpose flour in this recipe.
- Eggs: The eggs will make the waffles richer, flavorful, and fluffier.
- Baking Soda and Baking Powder: The mixture of the 2 leaveners will make your waffles light and airy, exactly what you want!
- Butter: Melt butter in the microwave, then allow it to cool a little before you add it to the waffle mixture.
- Vanilla, Salt, and Sugar are all added for flavor. Skip the sugar if you’re making savory waffles.
How To Make Homemade Waffles
- Preheat. Preheat your waffle iron, if it’s non stick then skip greasing it. If the waffles seem to stick, lightly spray with baking spray before making the FIRST waffle only.
- Dry Ingredients. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and soda, salt, and sugar if using.
- Mix the Batter. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla then pour in the melted butter as you whisk.
- Add Dry to Wet. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and using a whisk, whisk the batter until smooth. A few lumps may remain in the batter.
- Bake. Add third of a cup of batter to the waffle iron to make a 7 inch round waffle. Cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Tip!
Make a double batch and store in the freezer for quick waffles on busy weekdays! Allow the waffles to cool completely, then transfer to a freezer bag with wax paper between the waffles to prevent them from sticking and freeze. Reheat in the toaster before serving.
Recipe Tips
- Skip Greasing the Waffle Iron if the coating of the waffle iron is non-stick. If it seems to stick, then spray with baking spray for the FIRST waffle ONLY. Too much oil will make your waffles soggy.
- Watch the Cooking Time. In my Breville Waffle Iron, the waffles need about 3 minutes to cook through. Different waffle irons may have different baking times, so keep a close eye on the waffles to reach the desired browness.
- Wire Rack. As you cook the waffles, keep a wire rack next to you to allow the waffles cool, if you stack them on a plate while still super hot they can become soggy from the hot steam coming out of them.

Making Waffle Mix
You can make a dry waffle mix to store in your cupboard for quick waffles on weekdays. Combine the dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar if using), store in an airtight container to use later.
When ready to use, combine the buttermilk with eggs, pure vanilla extract, and melted butter. Then add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, whisk and cook according to the recipe card below.
FAQs
No they’re not the same. Waffle batter is thicker, and contains slightly different ingredients. If you’re looking for a great pancake recipe, find my classic pancakes here.
This can happen if your waffle iron does not have a non-stick coating, and it’s not greased with baking spray. You should also make sure that you only add the waffle batter to the waffle iron when the iron is HOT.
If you don’t have baking spray, brush the waffle iron with a little vegetable oil to lightly grease it.
You can serve them hot, warm, or cold. My favorite way to enjoy waffles is when they’re still fresh and hot. It all depends on your toppings, and how crispy you like your waffles to be. Keep in mind that waffles will slightly lose their crisp when they cool down.
Storing Tips
I recommend eating the waffles hot! If you happen to have leftovers, you can store them in the fridge in an airtight bag for up to 3 days.
To freeze, allow the waffles to cool completely then store in a freezer bag with wax paper lined between waffles to prevent them from sticking to each other. Reheat in a toaster or in a 350°F/180°C oven, lightly cover with foil to stop them from drying out and bake for 10 minutes or until warmed through.
Toppings
Keep them plain, and add a piece of softened butter and a drizzle of maple syrup. If you love cinnamon, try my Cinnamon Honey Butter.
Go for fresh fruit, slice strawberries, blueberries, and banana. For something a little different, make this Easy Fruit Salsa.
Homemade Strawberry Sauce is perfect with waffles, or make my Strawberry Waffles that contain pieces of strawberry.
Drizzle with Fudgy Chocolate Sauce, or make a batch of this Homemade Nutella, it tastes much better than the store-bought stuff.
Any of these waffle topping ideas would be delicious on my French Toast recipe or cottage cheese pancakes too!
