This Air Fryer chicken and potatoes is the easiest and tastiest weeknight dinner! Ready in under half an hour, this chicken dinner requires just a few simple ingredients but results in amazing flavors!

Roasted potatoes and chicken pieces in an air fryer basket

Although the Air Fryer might be a relatively new gadget in the market, many of us have one and use it on daily basis. I think of my Air Fryer as a time and effort saver on busy days, it’s great for air frying frozen foods without adding any oil. It’s also perfect for simple recipes like making roasted potatoes in the air fryer, quick baked potatoes, or roasted cauliflower.

You might think that it’s for cooking frozen or simple foods, but this gadget is wonderful for making dinner! It makes the best healthy crispy chicken breast, crispy fish fillets, chicken tenders, and even chicken fajitas (honestly, the BEST!)!

Making these recipes made me realize that I can totally make a whole meal in the Air Fryer, and that’s where the idea of this recipe came from. Roasted potatoes that are crispy from the outside but fluffy on the inside, with perfectly seasoned juicy and moist chicken pieces. Sounds perfect, right? 😉

The Ingredients

Here’s what you’ll need to make Air Fryer chicken and potatoes:

  • Chicken breast – boneless and skinless, cut into 1-inch pieces.
  • Potatoes – any type of potatoes works here. Wash, and dice into 1-inch pieces.
  • Olive oil – you need 1 tablespoon of oil for the potatoes, and 1 tablespoon for the chicken. Can be substituted with vegetable or canola oil, but olive oil gives a great flavor.
  • Seasonings – these can be changed up to your preference, but I used garlic, fresh thyme, smoked paprika, chili flakes, salt, and ground black pepper. For more ideas scroll down to the recipe card.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken and Potatoes

  • Preheat the Air Fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the potatoes with 1 crushed clove of garlic, and half of the seasonings and oil (smoked paprika, red chili flakes, salt, black pepper, and olive oil).
  • Place the potatoes in the Air Fryer basket, and air fry for 10 minutes flipping halfway through. Meanwhile, toss the chicken with the thyme and the rest of the ingredients (garlic, smoked paprika, red chili flakes, salt, black pepper, and olive oil) until well coated.
  • After the potatoes have been cooking for 10 minutes, remove the basket from the Air Fryer and with a spatula move the potatoes to one side. Add the chicken to the other side and cook for 10 more minutes flipping halfway through.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
How to make chicken and potatoes in the air fryer

In short, the potatoes need 20 minutes to cook and the chicken needs just 10 minutes (otherwise, it will become dry). So you need to cook the potatoes for 10 minutes first, then add the chicken and air fry for 10 more minutes.

How to Know if Chicken Is Cooked

You can check the doneness of the chicken by using a fork and a knife and cut through a small piece to see if the meat is well cooked in the middle.

But the best and safest way to check is with a kitchen thermometer as it will ensure that your chicken is safe to eat. Simply insert the thermometer in the center of the chicken piece, and the internal temperature of the chicken should be read 165°F (75°C). If it hasn’t reached that temperature, just put it back in the oven and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes and check again.

Sauces

Whilst this recipe is great to be served on it’s own, I like to serve it in a bowl with a drizzle of sauce. And that’s honestly my favorite part! You can either make your own homemade sauce, or simply use mayo, sriracha, or hot sauce. Below are my favorite homemade options:

Creamy sriracha mayo – Adds creaminess and flavor to the dish, simply mix 1 cup of mayo with 2 tablespoons of sweet chili sauce, and 1 tablespoon of hot sauce or sriracha. If you like it spicier, feel free to add more sriracha.

Yum yum sauce – a hibachi restaurant classic, but I use it on pretty much everything! It’s creamy and full of flavor. Follow this link for the recipe.

Sweet and sour sauce – ditch the store-bought bottle, and make your own! Seriously, it’s SO easy, healthier, and tastes much better than store-bought sauce.

Recommended Tools

  • An Air Fryer. I recently bought this Air Fryer and LOVE IT! It’s also the one you see in the pictures here.
  • Spatula: I like using silicone spatulas not to damage my pots and pans.
  • I love these measuring spoons to measure out the seasonings.
  • These are the mixing bowls that you see in all of my pictures, they’re honestly the best!
  • This air fryer magnetic cheat sheet is very handy, it contains cooking time and temperature to cook 66 most common ingredients which I find very useful.
  • I also really like these air fryer parchment liners, they’re not just for steaming and you can use them for cooking things like fries or chicken without worrying that the food will stick to the basket. They’re also quite cheap and there are 100 pcs in a package.

Aren’t you worried about contaminating the potatoes with the raw chicken?

No, the chicken and the potatoes are cooked together at a high temperature until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches at least 165°F so you have nothing to worry about.

Hi Sandra, I have the 5.8-quart Cosori Air Fryer that I linked in the post. The basket size is 9×9 inches. I hope this helps!
