Christmas Tree Waffles

A couple of years ago we started making these Christmas tree waffles in our house, so the kids enjoy them in the morning before or after opening their presents.

I usually put different treats in little bowls to decorate the waffles and let the kids decorate their own waffles with sprinkles, chocolate, candy, and fresh fruit.

How to Make the Waffles Green?

There are three options to make these waffles green, you can simply add green food coloring, or use matcha, or even kale powder!

My Waffle Maker Makes Square-Shaped Waffles, What Do I Do?

I also have a waffle maker like that which I’ve used before to make these cute Christmas tree waffles. Just cut each waffle square diagonally to create triangles, and stack them to shape a Christmas tree as I did in this recipe.

Christmas Breakfast Ideas

I love making breakfast ahead of time just became Christmas morning is so busy for us! These waffles work perfectly great, but I also like making spiced gingerbread granola, festive frozen yogurt bark, and this creamy Instant Pot rice pudding.

How to Make These Green Waffles?

You basically just make waffles, but you’ll just have to add green coloring.

Step 1. Make the batter: To a mixing bowl, add milk, egg and beat until well combined. Add sugar, and melted butter and mix. Add the rest of the ingredients, and whisk until just combined. Add green food coloring.

Step 2. The amount of food coloring that you need to add depends on what brand you’re using. Start with a couple of drops, whisk, and decide if you need to add more.

Step 3. To a preheated waffle maker, add the batter (I add around 1/2 cup but it depends on the size of the waffle maker that you have). Cover with the lid.

Step 4. Watch the waffle carefully as you don’t want them to crisp up a lot and change color to golden. But you should also be careful not to open the waffle iron too early.

Once the waffles are done, put them on a plate, and get the toppings ready.

Ideas to Make the Christmas Tree Star

You can use any fruit that you have, and using a small cookie cutter to cut out stars. I used mango (see picture below), but strawberries and starfruit are also great.

Cutting out stars from mango

Topping Ideas:

  • Sprinkles
  • M&Ms
  • Candies
  • Chocolates
  • Fresh fruit cut into small pieces, for example, banana slices or sliced strawberry.
  • Dried fruits
  • A drizzle of melted white chocolate
  • A drizzle of maple syrup
  • Tiny cookies
  • Desiccated coconut

We have also made these in the past where we served just green waffles in a plate without arranging into a Christmas tree and topped with our favorite toppings. So you can definitely do that if you like!

Another fun recipe is these chocolate peppermint cookies, they’re great to make with kids and the result is always amazing!

These are the cutest waffles and perfect for Christmas morning. We usually do cinnamon rolls for breakfast that day, but I just might have to forego them in favor of these!
