Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  2. Delicious Dessert Dip – A dessert cheese ball is just a thick dessert dip that’s been shaped into a ball! Everyone will love spreading this tasty chocolate chip dip onto cookies. It’s a more fun, hands-on experience than eating a slice of cake with a fork.
  3. Versatile Recipe – You can swap out the nuts and chocolate chips in this recipe for your favorite sweet ingredients, and make this recipe your own, unique dessert! I’ll share some ideas below.

Ingredients In This Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

Here’s what you need to make this dessert dip cheese ball with chocolate chips:

The ingredients needed to make a chocolate chip cheese ball, all in separate bowls. Text boxes label each ingredient

Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

  • Cream Cheese and Butter: Soften the cream cheese and butter so that they’ll blend together seamlessly to create a rich cheese ball base.
  • Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar sweetens the cream cheese, and thickens it so that it will hold together into a ball.
  • Brown Sugar: Light brown sugar is mostly here for its flavor. It gives the cream cheese a cookie dough-like sweetness.
  • Vanilla Extract: I always suggest using pure vanilla extract, especially in recipes like this one that aren’t baked. The better the vanilla, the better the flavor of your chocolate chip cheese ball.
  • Chocolate Chips: I am using regular semi-sweet chocolate chips. Miniature chocolate chips could also be used, or dark chocolate chips.
  • Chopped Pecans: Chop the nuts coarsely so that there are variations in the sizes.

How To Make A Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball

A collage of images showing how to make a chocolate chip cheese ball dessert
  1. Blend: In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese with butter and vanilla extract until smooth. Add powdered sugar and brown sugar and beat again until combined. Don’t overmix.
  2. Add Mix-ins: Stir in half of the chocolate chips and half of the chopped pecans. Cover the bowl and chill in the fridge for at least two hours.
  3. Shape: Once it’s chilled, shape the mixture into a ball, wrap it with plastic wrap, and chill for 1 more hour.
  4. Roll: Unwrap and then carefully roll the cheese ball in the remaining chocolate chips and pecans, then place the cheese ball on a serving plate.

Tip!

Mix the extra nuts and chocolate chips together in a shallow plate. This will make it easier to coat the outside of the cheese ball with them evenly. Press lightly to get everything to stick together!

Recipe Tips

  • Serve this Chocolate Chip Cheese ball with Nilla Wafers, graham crackers, Ritz Crackers or Pretzels. It’s fun to have some sweet and some salty dippers for people to choose from.
  • Make this dessert nut-free by replacing the pecans with an equal amount of chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or your favorite nut-free candy bars, chopped up. The nuts on the outside can be replaced with crushed cookies if you like.
  • You can also swap out the pecans for your favorite nuts. Walnuts or cashews would be delicious.
  • Toffee bits or Heath bits can be added to the dip. They will melt during refrigeration and create little bits of caramel inside. I’d avoid adding toffee to the outside of the cheese ball for this reason though.
  • Avoid overmixing the cream cheese dip. Too much air in the mixture will make it hard to form into a solid cheese ball. If you’ve already over-softened the cheese, mix in an additional ¼ cup of powdered sugar to firm it up.
  • Make Ahead: This dessert will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days, as long as it’s well-wrapped. You can prepare the dessert cheese ball and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to serve it.
  • Decorate It! Go see how I turned this cheese ball into an adorable Turkey Cheese Ball for my Thanksgiving table.

Storing Tips

Dessert cheese balls made with cream cheese can be stored in the fridge for up to a total of 5 days.

You can re-refrigerate leftovers as long as the cheese ball hasn’t been sitting out for too long. It’s recommended that you don’t leave cream cheese out of the fridge for more than 2 hours.

For longer storage of a chocolate chip cheese ball, wrap it well with plastic wrap and store it in the freezer for up to 2 months. Allow it to thaw overnight before serving.

FAQs

Why isn’t my dessert cheese ball holding together?

This typically happens when the cream cheese was blended too much. If there is too much air in the mixture, it will be too soft to hold its shape. Try adding more powdered sugar to the mixture to firm it back up again.

How do you eat a cheese ball?

You should serve this dessert with spreader knives so that guests can spread the cream cheese onto their cookies. Otherwise, they might be tempted to use the cookies to scoop directly into the cheese, and the cookies will break!

Can I make mini cheeseballs from this recipe?

I haven’t tried this myself, but I do think that you could easily adapt this recipe to make individual portioned cheese balls. Use a cookie scoop to make portions, roll each into chocolate chips and nuts, and use a pretzel stick to make a handle. If you do this, I suggest using mini chocolate chips, and that you chop the pecans into smaller pieces.

I won’t tell anyone how easy it is to make this chocolate chip cheese ball if you don’t want me to! Let everyone think you’re a brilliant cook who worked hard to make them a fancy dessert.

This recipe is so delicious, you’ll be asked to bring this sweet treat to all of the gatherings from now on! Pin the recipe so that you can find it again later.

Serve this creamy, sweet Chocolate Chip Cheese Ball as an appetizer or dessert! It's simple to make, and the perfect shareable party food.

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

  • 2 8-oz packages cream cheese softened
  • ¼ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter softened
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup light brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 ½ cups pecans chopped

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, beat cream cheese with butter and vanilla extract. Add powdered sugar, light brown sugar, and beat again until combined.
  • Stir in half of the chocolate chips, and half of the chopped pecans. Cover and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  • Shape the mixture into a ball, wrap with plastic wrap, and chill for 1 more hour.
  • Carefully roll the cheese ball in the remaining chocolate chips and pecans, and serve on a plate with Nilla wafers, graham crackers, or any type of cookies.

Notes:

  • Avoid overbeating the cream cheese. It’s important that we don’t mix too much air into it, as it will become difficult to form into a ball if it’s too airy.
  • Decorate it: It can be fun to decorate this cheeseball to look like a turkey for Thanksgiving! You can also add festive-colored chocolate chips, sprinkles, or M&Ms to theme this dessert dip for any occasion.
  • To Make Ahead:  You can store this dessert well wrapped, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • To Store: Leftovers can also be stored for up to 5 days from the time the cheese ball is made.
  • To Freeze: Cream cheese balls like this one can be frozen, very well wrapped, for up to 2 months. Allow it to thaw overnight in the fridge before decorating or serving.

    5 stars
I’ve been making this cheese ball for about 20 years, and it’s always a big hit. I never use nuts because of picky eaters, and a few loved ones with nut allergies, however, it’s just as delicious in its simplicity. I serve it with chocolate graham crackers, vanilla wafers, small butter cookies, and whatever small, sturdy complimentary cookies I can find. It’s just absolutely delicious!!
