Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- No Bake Recipe – This simple dessert recipe is made entirely without your oven. Cook the marshmallow coating on the stove, stir in the ingredients, and you’re done!
- Extra Marshmallows – Three whole bags of mini marshmallows are in this treats recipe! Keep some aside to stir in with the Chex so that there are plenty of fluffy marshmallows throughout.
- Sweet and Salty – It’s the combination that makes snacks like this one extra irresistible. Salty pretzels and salted butter help to balance the sweetness of the marshmallows.
Ingredients In Chex Mix Marshmallow Bars
Here’s what you need to make these tasty cereal treats:
- Salted Butter: Salted butter helps to balance out the sweetness of the marshmallows and creates a luscious coating for the cereal.
- Marshmallows: Miniature marshmallows melt down quickly and easily. You’ll need three bags for this recipe. Be sure to set aside 4 cups of marshmallows to mix in whole after the rest have been melted.
- Vanilla Extract: This enhances the flavor of the marshmallows just enough.
- Pretzels: For crunch and saltiness, add chopped pretzels to the bars, and then decorate each treat with a whole mini pretzel twist.
- Nuts: I’m using honey-roasted mixed nuts, but any type of nuts will work! You can use salted roasted peanuts, cashews, almonds, or whatever you have on hand.
- Chex: Just like your favorite Chex mix recipe, this dessert uses rice, corn, and wheat Chex for a varied crispy texture. You can choose to use just one or two of the varieties if you prefer.

How To Make Chex Mix Marshmallow Treats
- Melt Butter and Marshmallows: In a large Dutch oven or pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Then add all but 4 cups of the mini marshmallows, and continue to cook, stirring constantly until smooth and melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Add Crunch: To the marshmallow mixture, add the chopped pretzels and nuts and stir well.
- Add the Cereal and Marshmallows: Gently mix in the rice, corn, and wheat chex. Then fold in the 4 cups of mini marshmallows that you saved from before.
- Spread into a Pan: Line a large baking dish (10×15-inches) with foil or parchment paper, and spray with cooking spray to avoid sticking. Pour the treats mixture into the pan, and gently press down. Add 24 pretzels over the treats as decoration.
- Set: Allow the Chex mix treats to cool at room temperature for 2 hours, then refrigerate for 1 hour to set fully before slicing.
Tip!
These ooey gooey treats are best if kept in the refrigerator. They hold together best when cold, and I like to eat them chilled too!
Recipe Tips
- Work quickly. Once you take the marshmallow mixture off of the stove it will begin to cool and set. Be sure you have all of your ingredients ready to mix in, and your pan prepared ahead of time. If you pause in the middle, your treats might set inside of the pan!
- Be Gentle. Don’t press down too hard when pressing the mixture into the pan, or you’ll crush the Chex. When Stirring in the ingredients, it’s helpful to use a flexible spatula too.
- Let the kids help. Little hands will love helping to stir all of the ingredients into the pot!
- Don’t skip the chilling step. These bars will be easiest to cut when they are cold. At room temperature, they’ll be a bit soft and sticky.
- For an extra salty kick, sprinkle some flaky sea salt over the bars along with, or in place of the pretzels.
- To make this cereal treat recipe gluten-free, skip the wheat Chex (replace them with any other type of Chex), and use your favorite gluten-free pretzels.
- Try a smaller pan. To make thicker cereal treats, make this recipe in a 9×13-inch pan rather than a 10×15-inch one.
Storing Tips
Store your marshmallow treats in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to one week, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
You can also keep these at room temperature if you prefer. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 days if kept away from air and moisture.

Recipe FAQs
Yes! Instead of melting the butter and marshmallows on the stove, you can do this in a large microwave-safe bowl in the microwave. Microwave on high for one minute, then stir. Continue in 15-second increments inf needed. Once smooth and melted, stir in the rest of the ingredients and follow the recipe steps to complete your easy dessert.
Marshmallows that are old or stale will not melt well. Be sure to use fresh, unopened marshmallows next time.
Try adding mini chocolate chips, crushed potato chips, rainbow sprinkles, or holiday M&Ms to this recipe. Any crunchy salty thing can be used in place of the pretzels or nuts too!
These Chex Mix Marshmallow Treats are sweet, salty, and delicious! Plus they are perfect for any occasion. Be sure to Pin the recipe to save it for the next time you need an easy dessert!
