This avocado hummus is a smooth, creamy twist on classic hummus, made by blending chickpeas with ripe avocado, tahini, and lemon juice. The avocado softens the texture and adds a fresh, mild flavor that works especially well as a dip or spread.

One of My Favorite Hummus Variations

This avocado hummus dip is a fun twist on my classic hummus recipe, made extra creamy with ripe avocado, tahini, chickpeas, and fresh lemon juice. I love serving it as a dip with pita chips and fresh veggies, or spreading it on toast and sandwiches for an easy snack or light lunch.

What Changes When You Add Avocado

Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Adding avocado changes both the texture and flavor of hummus. It makes it smoother and less dense, so you don’t need as much tahini as in traditional hummus. The flavor also shifts slightly, becoming fresher and less nutty, but it still tastes like hummus rather than guacamole.

Because avocado can dull flavors, lemon juice and salt matter more here. If your hummus tastes flat, it usually needs more of one of those, not more garlic.

How to Make Avocado Hummus

Chickpeas, ripe avocado, and spices in a food processor ready to be blended into hummus

1. Add the chickpeas, avocado, lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, salt, and cumin to a food processor.

2. Blend until smooth and creamy, adding a little cold water or ice cubes if needed to loosen the hummus.

Tips for the Best Texture

  • Use ripe avocados so the hummus blends smoothly and is creamy, not chunky.
  • Blend for a few extra minutes even after it looks combined to get a lighter, smoother texture.
  • Add ice-cold water 1 tablespoon at a time to loosen the hummus without making it too thin. Adding ice cubes is also a great method.
  • Stop and scrape down the sides of the food processor so everything blends evenly.

How to Keep Avocado Hummus Green

Avocado hummus can darken over time, but a few small steps help keep it fresh:

  • Add enough lemon juice to slow browning
  • Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface before storing
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator
  • Stir and refresh with a little lemon juice before serving

Ways to Serve Avocado Hummus

Avocado hummus is great as a dip, spread, or part of a light meal. Serve it with warm pita, naan, flatbread, crackers, or crisp vegetables like cucumber, carrots, celery, and radishes.

It also works well spread on toast or sourdough, tucked into sandwiches and wraps, or used in recipes like my hummus veggie wrap for an easy lunch.

Equipment

  • Food processor

Ingredients

  • 1 15-ounce can cooked chickpeas drained and rinsed, or 1 ½ cups of cooked chickpeas
  • 2 medium ripe avocados
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1-2 tablespoons tahini paste
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin optional

Instructions

  • Add the chickpeas, avocado, garlic, tahini, salt, lemon juice, olive oil, and cumin to a food processor. Blend until mostly smooth.
  • Add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the hummus reaches your preferred consistency. Continue blending for 3 to 5 minutes for the smoothest texture.
  • Spoon the hummus into a serving bowl and spread it out with the back of a spoon. Drizzle with olive oil and finish with any garnishes you like.

Notes:

  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Press plastic wrap directly onto the surface before sealing to help prevent browning.
  • I do not recommend freezing this hummus.
  • Serve with pita bread, naan, crackers, or fresh vegetable sticks.
