Ingredients Needed to Make creamy Overnight Coffee Oats
Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
- Oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats are perfect for making overnight oats as they soak up the liquid nicely and provide a great texture. Avoid using steel cut oats and instant oats for this recipe.
- Chia Seeds: Adding chia seeds boosts the nutritional value with their superfood qualities and thickens the oats, making them creamy.
- Coffee: You can use any type of coffee you prefer. Freshly brewed espresso adds a rich flavor, but any coffee will do the trick and infuse the oats with a delicious coffee taste. Even instant coffee works if needed.
- Milk: This recipe is flexible with the type of milk you can use. Dairy-free milk like oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, or regular dairy milk will each work well. For something different, try making your own cashew milk for a vegan creamy addition. You can also do 50% milk and 50% Greek yogurt for a creamier and protein-rich option.
- Maple Syrup, Sea Salt, and Vanilla Extract: These ingredients combine to deepen the flavors of your oats. The maple syrup adds natural sweetness (or try honey instead), the vanilla offers a subtle aroma, and a pinch of salt enhances all the other flavors.

Top your overnight oats with banana, raspberries, peanut butter, almond butter, cinnamon, or chocolate chips for added flavor and texture.

Recipe Tips
- Adjusting Servings: If you’re preparing this for yourself, simply halve all of the ingredients. Looking to meal prep? Doubling the recipe ensures you have a delicious breakfast ready for the family or several mornings of coffee overnight oats.
- Consistency Preferences: The oats-to-milk ratio here is tried and true, but if you prefer a thinner consistency, feel free to add a bit more milk just before serving.
- Add a Protein Boost: Consider adding a scoop of protein powder when mixing your overnight oats. This not only enhances the nutritional value but also keeps you full longer.
- Mocha Twist: To transform these into Mocha Overnight Oats, simply add a tablespoon of cocoa powder to your mix. This gives you a delicious coffee-chocolate flavor that’s perfect for a rich, indulgent breakfast.
- Jar Mixing Method: Skip the bowl and combine all the ingredients directly in one or two jars. Seal them tightly and give them a good shake to mix everything evenly.
- Optimal Enjoyment Time: These oats taste best the next day, but you can store them in the fridge for a few days. They’ll maintain their texture well, as the oats stop absorbing liquid after a certain point.
- Gluten-Free Option: To ensure these oats are gluten-free, choose oats specifically labeled as such. This avoids the common cross-contamination with wheat that can occur during processing.
Storing Tips
- Make Ahead: Overnight oats are perfect for preparing in advance. Once you’ve mixed your ingredients in jars, they can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Weeklong Breakfasts: Consider making several servings over the weekend. This way, you’ll have your breakfasts sorted out for the entire week, ready to grab and go every morning.
