Key Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make these tasty dog treats from scratch:
Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
- Whole Wheat Flour: Whole wheat flour has more fiber than white flour, and is a great choice for making homemade dog treats.
- Egg: One large egg helps to bind the dough together and adds a bit of rise.
- Creamy Peanut Butter: Choose your favorite peanut butter, but try to use one with minimal added sugar. Be certain to read the labels on the peanut butter and avoid any that contain Xylitol, which is a sweetener that is toxic to dogs.
- Banana: A banana adds moisture to the dog treats and natural sweetness. Be sure to use a ripe banana for the best flavor and texture.
- Salt and Water: To make sure that this peanut butter banana dog treat dough is tasty and well mixed together.
How To Make Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats
- Make Dough: First, preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C, and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat silicone mat. Then Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Beat with a hand mixer until well-combined. You should have a loose dough after mixing.
- Roll Out: Add flour to your work surface. Use your hands or a rolling pin to flatten the dough to ¼ inch. Cut shapes out of the dough using a dog treat cookie cutter or any other cutter you’d like.
- Bake: Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving at least an inch in between each cookie. Bake for 18-20 minutes.
- Cool: Let the baked dog treats cool on the pan for 5 minutes,
Tip!
You might enjoy a cookie hot from the oven, but your dog probably won’t. Be sure to let the treats cool completely before sharing!
Recipe Tips
- Use Your Favorite Cookie Cutters – I found dog treat cutters that are shaped like bones and paws, but biscuit cutters or holiday cookie cutters will work too. In a pinch, you can use a knife to make these into squares or rectangles too. Your pup will love them no matter what shape they’re in!
- These Are Totally Edible – feel like taking a taste? No worries, these dog treats are tasty enough that humans will enjoy them too, although the texture of them is more suited for dogs. Humans might like Snickerdoodles instead!
- Use Extra Flour on the counter, the cutters, and the rolling pin to keep the dough from sticking. You can also knead in up to a half cup of additional flour if you need to.
- Try Adding a Savory Element – Instead of water, mix up the dough with bone broth or turkey stock. You might also consider mixing in some finely chopped turkey bacon. Your dog will love the combination of sweet and savory in these treats!
How to Store Homemade Banana Dog Treats
Let the baked treats cool, and store them in an airtight container. They will stay fresh for 7-10 days at room temperature.

FAQs
I think if dogs could talk, they would all be telling us about how much they love peanut butter, all day long! Peanut butter is safe for dogs to eat, but be sure that your peanut butter includes only natural ingredients. Some products may be sweetened with xylitol, which is a sugar substitute that is toxic to dogs.
Yes. Some dogs may be sensitive to wheat, and the good news is that this recipe is pretty forgiving, and will work just fine with other types of flour. Substitute 3-4 cups of rye flour for the wheat flour in this recipe, or 2.5 cups of rice, barley, or potato flour. If you make flour substitutions, you may need to adjust the amount of water added to get the right consistency in the dough.
How sticky your dough is will depend on the type of peanut butter you use. Natural peanut butter makes the dough stickier than Jif or Skippy does. Add a bit more flour to the dough if needed, and be sure to flour your surface, rolling pin, and cookie cutters.
Your best friend is going to love these peanut butter banana dog treats that you made just for them! Make these every week so that you’ll always have a healthy treat for your pup, and be sure to pin the recipe too.

Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats
Equipment
- Dog Treat Cookie Cutters or any 3-inch cutter
Ingredients
- 3 cups whole wheat flour + additional for rolling out dough
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup creamy peanut butter that does not include xylitol
- 1 banana sliced thinly or mashed
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F/180°C, and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat silicone mat.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour with an egg, peanut butter, banana, salt, and water. Beat with a hand mixer (or a stand mixer) until well combined, it will have a dough-like consistency.
- Sprinkle a handful of flour on a flat clean surface to roll out the doggie treat mixture. Use the palms of your hands or a rolling pin to flatten the mixture to about ¼ inch.
- Using a dog bone shaped cookie cutter (or cookie cutter of your choice), carefully cut out cookies and place them on the baking sheet. Set the cut outs on prepared baking sheets, leaving at least 1 inch between cookies.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes.
- When done, allow cookies to cool on the sheet for 1 minute then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely (at least 15 minutes) before serving.
Notes:
- In place of wheat flour, you can use gluten-free all-purpose flour, rye flour, or any other ground grain that your pup enjoys. You will need to adjust the amount of flour to liquid, experimenting until you get a dough that you can easily roll out.
- Use Your Favorite Cookie Cutters – I found dog treat cutters that are shaped like bones and paws, but biscuit cutters or holiday cookie cutters will work too. In a pinch, you can use a knife to make these into squares or rectangles too. I was able to make 20 treats using 3-inch cutters.
- Use Extra Flour on the counter, the cutters, and the rolling pin to keep the dough from sticking. You can also knead in up to a half cup of additional flour if you need to.
- Try Adding a Savory Element – Instead of water, mix up the dough with chicken broth. You might also consider mixing in some finely chopped turkey bacon. Your dog will love the combination of sweet and savory in these treats!

Can I use all purpose flour or almond flour? I don’t have whole wheat.
Little Sunny Kitchen says
All purpose flour would be a better substitute than almond flour in this recipe. You may need a bit less liquid, but I’m not sure how much less, as I haven’t tested the treats that way.
