Why You’ll Love This Recipe
First, you’ll love that you can add this easy recipe to your list of crock pot dinners!
Crock Pot meals are mostly hands-off, so they can be huge time savers. Set up this meal in the morning and dinner will be waiting for you when you get home from work!
Easy ingredients go into this slow cooker casserole recipe, like frozen tater tots, frozen mixed veggies, and canned soup. You might even have everything you need already at home in your freezer!
These easy ingredients create a dish with mild, familiar flavors, so kids will love it just as much as you will! Everyone always asks for seconds of this tasty dinner.
Key Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make this cheesy tater tot casserole in your Crock Pot:
- Tater Tots: Keep your tots frozen until you’re ready to add them to the pot. Letting them thaw will make them mushy, and they’ll fall apart too easily while the casserole is cooking.
- Cream of Chicken Soup: Or use cream of mushroom, it’s up to you! I don’t always opt to use cream soups in my casserole recipes, but in this one, a can of condensed soup works perfectly.
- Ground Beef: I am using 80/20 beef for this recipe. Anything fattier will yield less actual meat. You can also make this recipe with extra lean beef or ground turkey if you want to.
- Cheddar Cheese: All good tater tot casseroles need plenty of melty cheese! I suggest that you grate your own cheddar cheese from a block, rather than buying the pre-shredded, bagged cheese. It’s more flavorful that way and it melts better.

How To Make Crock Pot Tater Tot Casserole
- Set up the Bottom Layer: Spray the crock pot with non-stick cooking spray, and arrange half of the frozen tater tots in it in a single layer.
- Cook the Beef: In a skillet, brown the ground beef with diced onions, cooking, and breaking it apart, until the meat is no longer pink. Drain the fat away.
- Mix the Filling: Add the beef to a large mixing bowl with milk, condensed soup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, frozen vegetables, and half of the shredded cheddar cheese. Stir to combine.
- Layer the Casserole: Spread the meat mixture over the tater tots in the crock pot, then sprinkle with the remaining cheese, and top with the other half of the tater tots.
- Cook: Cover and cook in the slow cooker on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6-8 hours.
Tip!
Feel free to sprinkle with even more cheese before serving if you like things extra cheesy like we do!
Recipe Tips
- Instead of frozen mixed veggies, you can make this with frozen green beans, frozen peas, or any blend of frozen veggies you like!
- This recipe also works with canned vegetables or fresh chopped veggies.
- Tasty additions to this dish can include cooked and crumbled bacon, tangy sour cream, a can of Rotel, or sauteed mushrooms. Have fun adding flavors and making this recipe your own!
- Avoid opening the lid of the slow cooker while the casserole is cooking. There’s really no reason to, and you’ll be letting out heat, causing the dish to need more time to cook.
Storing Tips
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
We usually reheat servings in the microwave – they make a delicious lunch the next day.

Recipe FAQs
This crock pot casserole recipe works best in a 6 or 7-quart crock pot. If you’d like to double the recipe, make it in two slow cookers, rather than trying to double the ingredients in one Crock Pot.
Use the slow cooking function of your Instant Pot to cook this casserole. It works just the same way as a traditional crock pot!
Yes, you will find that the texture of the tots in this recipe is softer than if you made something similar in the oven. I think you’ll really enjoy the little bits of potatoes from the bottom layer mixed in with the creamy meat though!

Can make this version in a pan and put it in the oven?
Little Sunny Kitchen says
I think that would work just fine. Enjoy!
CJ says
do you get some crunch on the tots in the crockpot?
Little Sunny Kitchen says
not really, since the tater tots are cooking in a moist environment. You could try to put the casserole under the broiler for a few minutes to crisp them up a bit though.
Ginger Whitley says
