Baked potatoes on the grill is one of the best methods to cook baked potatoes. They’re perfectly seasoned, and turn out perfectly soft and tender, so fluffy with deliciously crisp skin. It’s an easy side that your whole family will love, and can be loaded with all of your favorite toppings!

3 Baked Potatoes with butter, chopped chives, and sea salt flakes

Baked potatoes on the grill is one of the things that I look forward to every summer weekend! It became a tradition to throw a few baked potatoes on the hot grill whenever we’re grilling out.

I remember ever since I was very little, my parents used to wrap potatoes in foil and threw them on the grill along with other things like burgers, kabobs, sausages, and vegetables. It was always my favorite part when it came to grilling days to enjoy a warm bbq baked potato with lots of toppings, I LOVE potatoes and I’d eat them every single day if I can!

Nowadays, we still gather and have grilling parties on the weekends. The grilled portobello mushrooms and these baked potatoes are always on the menu (mostly for the vegetarians), and these grilled chicken kabobs and veggie kabobs are also a must!

How to Grill Baked Potatoes

  • Select starchy potatoes for the best results. If you’re in the UK go for Maris Piper or King Edwards. If you’re in the US, go for Russet potatoes. Choose potatoes that are similar in size to get even cooking.
  • Preheat the grill to 390°F (200°C) for 15 minutes.
  • Scrub and wash the potatoes, and pat them dry with paper towels.
  • Pierce the potatoes with a fork a couple of times on each side to allow heat to escape.
  • Brush the potatoes with any neutral oil that has a high smoke point (such as avocado or grapeseed oil), and season with sea salt.
  • Wrap each potato individually in 2 layers of foil.
  • Place the wrapped in foil potatoes directly on the grill, and cover with the lid. Cook for 45-55 minutes turning halfway through, or until you can easily pierce the center of a potato with a knife or a fork. If you have a kitchen thermometer, the internal temperature should be around 200-210°F (93-100°C).

  • Using kitchen tongs, remove the hot potatoes from the grill and allow them to cool down a little so that you can handle them with your hands.
  • Unwrap foil, and cut the potatoes open immediately with a knife as otherwise they’ll steam inside and become heavy. we want really fluffy potatoes here.
  • And that’s it, your baked potatoes on the grill are now ready! just add a piece of butter, and lightly fluff with a fork then serve with your favorite toppings!

Tips on How to Make the Perfect Baked Potato on the Grill

  • Make sure to preheat your grill before you put the potatoes on it.
  • Use neutral oil with a high smoke point, I usually go for avocado oil, peanut oil, or sunflower oil.
  • Pierce the potatoes with a fork just a couple of times to avoid exploding!
  • If you’re grilling other things at the same time, keep in mind that the potatoes will take a bit longer to be ready.
  • Serve your potatoes as a Baked Potato Bar, and let everyone choose their favorite toppings!
