- Simple – You only need a few ingredients to make hot chocolate bombs! Don’t buy the expensive ones at the store, they’re so easy to make at home.
Ingredients Needed
Here’s what you need to make the Grinch hot chocolate bombs:
Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
- Candy Melts: I’m using Wilton dark green candy drops because that’s what I had available, but you can use the lighter color to make them more Grinchy. Or use white chocolate melts, and add green and yellow food coloring to reach the desired color.
- Hot Chocolate Mix: You can use a regular hot chocolate mix if that’s what you have, but I went for a white hot chocolate mix that I picked up at the store.
- Mini Marshmallows: Use white miniature marshmallows, the larger ones won’t work here. If you can find heart-shaped marshmallows, these would look amazing here!
- Candy Cane: I had a bag of Brach’s crushed cane canes, and added a little bit of peppermint flavor. Regular candy canes can be crushed in a Ziploc bag with a rolling pin and added to the mix.
- Sprinkles: I decorate my hot chocolate bombs with a sprinkle of sparkling white sanding sugar, and Wilton’s heart sprinkles.
How To Make Hot Chocolate Bombs
- Melt the Chocolate: Add chocolate melts to a bowl, and microwave at 50% powder at 30 second increments sitting in between until fully melted. Be careful not to overheat the candy.
- Add to Molds: Take the silicone molds, and spoon about 1 tablespoon of melted candy into each half-sphere. And then with the back of a small spoon, spread the candy around the sphere so that it’s well coated. You need to have a good coating so that the chocolate bombs are not fragile.
- Chill: Place the molds on a wire rack upside down, and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes or until hardened.
- Remove: Wear gloves not to stain the hot chocolate bombs with your hands, and carefully remove the half spheres from the mold.
- Add Hot Chocolate Mix: To half of the half-spheres, add 1 tablespoon of white hot chocolate mix to each, half a teaspoon of crushed candy canes, and a few mini marshmallows.
- Seal: Melt the remaining candy melts, pipe a small amount on the edges of an empty half-sphere then connect it with the corresponding filled half-sphere. Repeat with the remaining. You can smooth out the center seam with a warm spoon.
- Decorate: Drizzle the remaining candy melts over the spheres, and decorate with sprinkles and hearts.
Tip!
Another way to seal the sphere is by warming up a small microwave-safe plate in the microwave just for 30-45 seconds. Then lay each decorated empty half-sphere on the plate for a couple of seconds until it starts to melt and create a “glue”, then connect it with the corresponding filled half sphere. Repeat with the remaining.
Recipe Tips
- Don’t overheat the candy: You have to be very careful when you melt the candy in the microwave not to overheat it. If it happens, you can add a small spoon of vegetable shortening and mix that in until the candy has a drizzling consistency.
- Don’t make them too thin! As you spread the melted candy in the mold, make sure that the candy layer is not too thin as your hot chocolate bombs will be too fragile. If after the chocolate sets, you find some weak spots, just melt some candy or chocolate and add it to these spots to “strengthen them” then chill again
- Wear Gloves: The best way to get clean and tidy hot chocolate bombs is to handle them with food safe gloves. If you do it with your hands, you will get fingerprints all over the hot chocolate bombs.
- Work Quickly: Remember when if handle the hot chocolate bombs too much with your hands, they will melt from the heat of your hands so you have to work quickly or just make sure not to touch them too much.
- Do Not Add Sprinkles to the hot chocolate mix, I tried that with red sprinkles and it turns out that they will bleed into the drink.
- Make a sweet and festive snack like Christmas Puppy Chow or Christmas Popcorn to go with Grinch Hot Chocolate.
How To Make Hot Chocolate Using A Hot Cocoa Bomb?
Add one hot chocolate bomb to a mug, then pour about 6oz (175ml) of warm milk over the cocoa bomb and the shell will start melting and releasing the mini marshmallows. Use a spoon to stir the hot chocolate until it’s nice and creamy.
Storing Tips
Store the hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container or a Ziploc bag at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
FAQs
You can wrap an egg with saran/plastic wrap, dip half of the egg in chocolate and let it harden. The cocoa bombs won’t be round (more like egg shaped), but that should work. You can also use cupcake liners and brush the sides with melted candy, add the filling, and drizzle some more melted candy over the filling to seal.
The warmer the milk is, the more dramatic the effect will be!
