Key Ingredients
Complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
You only need a few pantry ingredients to make this healthy bread machine recipe. It is recommended that you add the ingredients to your bread maker in the following order (liquids first, dry ingredients, and yeast is last):
- Water: Water mixes everything else together into a cohesive dough.
- Olive Oil is used mainly for flavor. If you prefer, you can substitute another oil or melted unsalted butter.
- Sugar: The sugar helps activate the yeast, and proof the dough. It also helps create a nice crust. Sugar can be substituted with honey or maple syrup, or left altogether if making a sugar-free loaf.
- Salt: Salt is important for flavoring, you can reduce it if you’re watching your sodium intake.
- Strong Whole Wheat Bread Flour: The type you should search for in the US and Canada will be labeled as “Whole wheat flour”. In the UK and Australia, this is called “Strong wholemeal bread flour”. It will have a coarser, more grainy texture than white flour.
- Instant Yeast: Instant yeast is the right choice when deciding what type of yeast to buy for your bread maker bread. You may also see “bread maker yeast”. This is also Instant yeast, just with a different label, so feel free to use either. Active Dry Yeast won’t properly bloom in the bread maker, so don’t use that here.
How To Make Seed Bread in a Bread Machine
- Add Ingredients: Toss the ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the following order: Water, Oil, Salt, Sugar, Flour, All the seeds, and lastly, Yeast.
Tip!
You’re looking to add a total of 5-8 tablespoons of seeds and chopped nuts (if desired). So pick your favorites and dump them in the bread machine!
- Set Up and Turn On: Add the bread pan to the bread machine, close the lid, and plug in the machine. Choose the wholemeal or whole wheat bread setting, medium size, and start the machine with your chosen program.
- Cool: After the machine ends the baking cycle and beeps, unplug it, open the lid, and remove the pan from the machine with kitchen mitts or kitchen towels. Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then shake it out of the pan and allow it to cool completely. Carefully remove the paddle from the bottom of the loaf if it got stuck there.
Tip!
For your convenience, I’ve included US cup measurements, but measuring by weight is preferable. A digital scale is great for getting consistent results every time.
Storing Tips
Make sure that your loaf has cooled compltely then store in a large plastic bag, or a breadbox and store at room temperature for 4-5 days. It also freezes very well, I recommend slicing it and freezing for up to 2 months.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it matter what order I put the ingredients in the bread maker?
The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you to add the liquids first, then the dry ingredients. The instant yeast always goes in last. This ensures that the yeast is separated from the liquids until the kneading begins and is an important step to follow.
What type of yeast do I use in the bread machine?
Choose Rapid rise yeast, Instant yeast, or Bread Machine yeast. According to Fleishmann’s Yeast’s website, the three are exactly the same, just sold under different names. Active Dry yeast is different from the others, and not recommended for bread machine recipes.
What bread machine should I buy?
This Hamilton Beach, programmable bread maker, is very well-rated and available at a reasonable price. You can buy more expensive bread makers, but I would start with a basic one until you’re comfortable and know that you want to use it often.
Why didn’t my loaf rise?
You should always make sure that your yeast is fresh and active. It could be that your yeast is dead, or you added too much salt or sugar, or you forgot to add the yeast.
Why did my bread rise too much?
You probably added too much yeast.
Why is my dough not coming together?
If this happens for some reason, add more liquid (1 tablespoon at a time) until a ball of dough is formed.
Why is my dough too sticky?
You need to add more flour, add it gradually (1 tablespoon at a time) until a ball of dough is formed.

- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
Instructions
- Layer your ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the following order: Water, Oil, Salt, Sugar, Flour, All the seeds, and lastly, Yeast.
- Add the bread pan to the bread machine, and make sure that it’s secured. Close the lid, and plug in the machine. Choose the wholemeal or whole wheat bread setting, medium size, and start the machine.

- When the baking cycle ends, unplug the bread machine, open the lid, and remove the pan from the machine with kitchen mitts. Allow the bread to cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then shake it out of the pan and allow it to cool completely. Carefully remove the paddle from the bottom of the loaf if it got stuck there.
Notes:
- Warm Water: When making bread it’s best to have all ingredients at room temperature to start. The water should be a bit above that, at 110°F/45°C, in order to activate the yeast.
- You Can Sift the Flour: Sifting flour before making bread with it helps to aerate it, and will make a fluffier, less dense bread. It’s not necessary for success but is an option.
- You’re looking to add a total of 5-8 tablespoons of seeds and chopped nuts (if desired). So pick your favorites and dump them in the bread machine!
- You will get a medium 1 and ½ lb or 750g loaf.
- Nutrition: Calculated is just a rough estimate for the smallest loaf if it’s sliced into 10 slices. Info is per slice.

Is this good for sandwiches? Im on a search for good healthy soft sandwich bread 🙂
Diana says
I think this bread is great for sandwiches if you want a healthy option. Of course, it isn’t fluffy like my basic white loaf but it’s still good!

Can you please put the 1LB receipt as well?
Chris P. says

My wife was in the mood for some seeded bread and found your recipe. Making this as I write this. Had fun with the seeds ( sunflower, flax, chia, sesame, hemp hearts, and fresh cracked macadamia nuts) while still keeping it to 8 Tbsp.
Going to top it with poppy seeds at the right time. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out!

Just a question: 1 teaspoon yeast doesn’t seem like enough or am I missing something?
Diana says

I think adding a tbsp or 2 of molasses might do the trick. Molasses is full of iron and would add more nutrients to your bread. Also, yeast love to eat molasses. Yeast need something to eat (a sugar) to grow to their full potential and become more gaseous. Molasses is not used as much in kitchens these days, most people use brown sugar instead. Brown sugar is just a mixture of sugar and molasses syrup. So, to keep everything healthy, leave the white sugar out and just use the molasses syrup. I have had great luck with molasses. That is my secret ingredient in many dishes that I cook.
