Let's make it!

Canadian Nanaimo Bars with a crispy, nutty base, a rich custard filling, and a smooth chocolate topping are a delicious no-bake dessert.

1

In a saucepan, melt the butter with the cocoa powder and granulated sugar until smooth

2

Drizzle ½ cup of the butter mixture into a bowl with the egg, whisking constantly to temper the egg. Then pour the egg mixture back into the pot and turn the heat up to medium. Cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens.

3

Remove the chocolate from the heat and stir in the graham crackers, coconut, and nuts.

4

Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and chill in the fridge.

5

In a small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream and custard powder (or pudding mix) until smooth. Set aside.

6

Combine butter and powdered sugar, beating well with an electric mixer after each until smooth and creamy. Combine with the custard mixture.

7

Add the custard to the bottom layer, smoothing it out evenly with a spatula. Chill again for at least 10 minutes while you make the topping.

8

Melt and spread the chocolate over the custard layer and then return the dish to the fridge to chill for 30 minutes.

9

After 30 minutes (don’t go too much longer or the bars will be too firm and hard to cut), slice the bars into 16 servings. Serve immediately, or store in the fridge for later.
