Divide the mixture into 4 portions and gently flatten and shape into patties about ¼ inch thick, making an indent in the center of each patty with your thumb or the back of a spoon.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat; I like to use cast iron for burgers. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to the skillet, and when it’s hot add your patties, working in two batches if needed.
Cook the burgers until browned with a nice crust. Flip and cook on the other side to your desired doneness. This will take between 6 and 10 minutes, depending on how done you'd like your burgers.
Add slices of American cheese on top of each patty, remove from heat and cover with a lid to allow the cheese to melt. Assemble the burgers with your favorite condiments and toppings on toasted buns.
