Russian Grenki

Russian fried bread is a simple and easy recipe that is perfect for breakfast

Ingredients

  • ½ (0.5) white baguette
  • 1 large (1) egg
  • 1 cup (240ml) (1 cups) whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon (1 tsp) granulated sugar
  • Cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  • Cut baguette into rings, beat egg with milk and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
  • Place bread slices into milk mixture until they are moist and absorbed the liquid mixture. 
  • Heat oil and butter on a frying pan on medium heat then fry the bread on both sides until golden brown. 
  • Top with jam or condensed milk if making sweet Grenki, or with savoury toppings like sautéed mushrooms and poached egg if making savoury Grenki. Serve with tea of coffee.
