Cut baguette into rings, beat egg with milk and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
Place bread slices into milk mixture until they are moist and absorbed the liquid mixture.
Heat oil and butter on a frying pan on medium heat then fry the bread on both sides until golden brown.
Top with jam or condensed milk if making sweet Grenki, or with savoury toppings like sautéed mushrooms and poached egg if making savoury Grenki. Serve with tea of coffee.
