Ingredients

  • 4 ½ cups microwave movie theatre butter popcorn from a 2.75 -3 oz. bag
  • 6 cups Rice Chex Cereal or Corn Chex
  • 10 ounces dark chocolate melting wafers see note 1
  • 1 3.4 ounce box instant chocolate fudge pudding mix unprepared
  • ½ cup M&Ms
  • ½ cup Peanut M&Ms
  • ½ cup chocolate covered peanuts
  • ½ cup Nestle Buncha Crunch
  • ½ cup Resse's Pieces
  • ½ cup Milk Duds

Instructions

  • Microwave popcorn according to package directions. Remove any unpopped kernals and and allow to cool.
  • Add the Chex to a large mixing bowl.
  • Add the melting wafers to a medium bowl and microwave for 45 seconds, stir, then microwave for an additional 45 seconds. If the chocolate isn't fully melted after stirring the second time, microwave for another 15 seconds.
  • Add the melted chocolate to the bowl of cereal and gently stir with a rubber spatula until evenly coated.
  • Sprinkle on the powdered pudding mix and toss until coated.
  • Transfer the muddy buddies to a clean bowl and combine with popcorn and candies.

Notes

  1. Melting wafers or almond bark work best for making muddy buddies since they melt so easily and smoothly, but any kind of chocolate will work! Use what you have. Try white chocolate, dark chocolate, or even semisweet chocolate chips.
  2. You can use any type of chocolate candy that you like, just be sure that the total amount of candy is about 3 cups.
  3. Fruity or gummy candies can be added, but it's best to add them just before eating so that they stay fresh.
  4. Technically, this recipe makes about 20 servings that will be a little larger than a half cup. This is perfect for kids, but the grown-ups might enjoy a larger portion!
  5. To Store: It's best to serve this snack right away, but you can keep it in an airtight container for 1-2 days. The popcorn will start to get stale after that.
  6. To Make Ahead: You can make this mix without the popcorn added, and store it in the fridge for a week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Add fresh popcorn just before serving.
