Add the mix to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave at high power for 30 second intervals, stirring well after each. Heat until the cake mix has reached 165°F/74°C throughout.
In a large bowl, beat or mix together the cream cheese and the whipped topping until smooth. Add in the vanilla extract and mix until well incorporated.
Add the milk and cake mix, and stir with a spatula until combined. Add more milk if needed to reach the desired consistency. Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate until serving.

Heat treating cake mix: You need to heat the cake mix to a temperature of 165°F/74°C so that it is safe to consume. You aren’t fully cooking the flour, just heating it up to a temperature that will kill any bacteria. You can do this in one of two ways:
- Microwave: In the microwave, cook the cake mix in a bowl at 30-second intervals, stirring well after each. Continue until the temperature of the mix is 165°F/74°C.
- Oven: Preheat the oven to 300°F/150°C. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper or a silicone mat and spread the cake mix onto it. Bake the flour, removing the pan from the oven to stir the cake mix every 90 seconds. Test using a thermometer to ensure that the cake mix reaches 165°F/74°C.
