Equipment

Ingredients

  • water heated to 175°F/80°C.
  • 3 tablespoons coffee beans or medium-fine ground coffee

To Make Americano

  • ¾ cup hot water

To make a Latte

  • ¾ cup milk

To make Cold Brew

  • ½ cup cold water
  • ¼ cup ice cubes

Instructions

  • Heat water to 175°F/80°C. I find it easiest to boil the water and then allow it to cool for a minute.
  • Insert a coffee filter in the aeropress filter basket/cap, screw it on and place the aeropress on a mug.
  • Grind coffee beans to medium fine ground, or use one Aeropress scoop of ground coffee.
  • Add the ground coffee to the Aeropress and shake lightly to level out the grounds.
  • Pour water into the Aeropress just until it reaches the number 1 mark. on the tube.
  • Using a tea spoon or the stirrer provided, stir briefly about 10 times. For stronger coffee or for Americano steep for up to 1 minute.
  • Then insert the plunger in the aeropress, and squeeze out all of the coffee until you hear a long hiss (the process takes about 20-30 seconds). This sound means that all of the coffee has been squeezed out. If it seems very hard to press, just pause for a few seconds and start again.
  • Remove the aeropress from the mug, unscrew the basket to discard the coffee grounds and filter, and rinse the Aeropress. Enjoy your espresso-style coffee, or follow the instructions below to make a different type of coffee drink.

Aeropress Americano (American Style Coffee)

  • Brew as above, then add ¾ cup of hot water to the mug and stir. I recommend letting the coffee steep in the Aeropress for 1 minute if you plan to add water to it.

Aeropress Latte

  • Brew as above, then add ¾ cup of hot milk to the mug and stir.

Aeropress Cold Brew

  • Brew as above, then add  ½ cup iced water, and ¼ cup of ice cubes.

Notes

  • Grind Size: The size of your grind will affect the flavor of your brew. Finer ground coffee will give you bold, rich coffee flavors, while a coarser grind will give you a lighter coffee. The ideal grind size with this method is a medium to fine grind.
  • Don't Press Too Hard: Try to be patient, and press down slowly and evenly on the plunger while you're brewing. Pressing too hard can compact the coffee grounds too much and make everything more difficult.
  • Water Temperature Matters: You want your water to be hot, but not too hot. Aim for water at a temperature of 175°F (80°C).
  • Experiment: This how-to shows you exactly how I like to make my coffee in the Aeropress, but there are other methods and different ways to use this awesome machine too. Once you've mastered this, keep experimenting to create your perfect brew.
