Red Tomato Restaurant & Lounge is a lovely little Western restaurant open in Langkawi, Malaysia.
During our vacation in Langkawi this year, we got the chance to visit and review the Red Tomato Restaurant & Lounge. Located at Jalan Pantai Cenang, which we refer to as “Cenang street” not sure if that is the correct name but we love it so much as most restaurants, cafes and shops are located there. The restaurant is just on the opposite side of the “The Zon Duty-Free” and as you may already know, Langkawi is a duty-free island which means that you can buy alcohol, chocolates and other things at affordable prices.
The first thing that we fell in love with at this restaurant was the lovely atmosphere, the weather is always lovely in Langkawi as we have visited twice, once during the wet season and then again during the dry season. Langkawi is incredible during both seasons, and my favourite part is that you can wear light summer clothes throughout the whole year!
We got to meet the lovely owner, her name is Tanja and she’s originally from Germany. There’s a little story behind this restaurant; Tanja visited Langkawi sometime back and while visiting the island she met Oli, they fell in love and she decided to stay for a little longer. Tanja and Oli opened a backpackers place on Cenang beach in 2000, then later started expanding to a cafe and moved to the new location in 2010. They are planning to open another branch of Red Tomato in Kuala Lampur this year.
So now let’s talk about the food. We had fresh smoothies, berry and strawberry smoothies that are smoothly blended with ice cream, milk and yoghurt. Sounds perfect right? We loved these!
Followed by a Caesar Salad with chicken, the salad and the chicken were fresh and nicely put together with a creamy caesar sauce, topped with crunchy croutons.
My main course was salmon fillet panfried in butter and served with french fries. I wouldn’t say that it was extraordinary, but it was nice and I enjoyed my food.
And my partner had a smoked salmon and capers tarte flambé which is basically crispy thin pastry filled with creme fraiche and cheese, topped with smoked salmon and capers. He said that it was pretty good!
All in all we had a good experience, and next time I visit Langkawi, I will definitely visit this restaurant again, and hopefully visit the one in Kuala Lampur! If you’re looking for a lovely Western restaurant to visit in Langkawi, then this is the place to be. It’s also great for breakfast in the morning, or maybe if you just want to enjoy a few drinks with your friends in the evening!
