You’re now engaged, and it’s time for you to plan an engagement party to share the amazing news with your family and friends! In this engagement party checklist you will find everything that you need to think of/plan to ensure that nothing is left or forgotten.
So we finally did it! Yazz and I are engaged! I know that this sounds crazy but we are getting married NEXT month!
Celebrating our engagement with our families and friends was the perfect way to end the year. Yazz and I started dating at Uni in 2010, and next month we will be celebrating 8 years of good memories and our very own wedding!
Since our engagement party was the first time that our families spent time together, we wanted to make sure that everything was perfect. Here is a list of things that you need to think about/plan before your engagement party:
PICK A DATE
You want to make sure that all of your beloved ones are next to you on this special day to celebrate, so plan this day in advance but the date must also be close to your engagement date as you don’t want the engagement joy to fade. Think about your parents, siblings, grandparents, friends and anyone else that you really care about.
MAKE A GUEST LIST
I believe that engagement parties should be kept small, and only include close family and friends so creating a guest list will be fairly easy unless you are planning a big engagement party. You should also only invite people that you are planning to invite to the wedding.
SET YOUR BUDGET
Before diving into the world of wedding planning, you will be enjoying planning your engagement party. You need to sit down with your partner and figure out what budget you’re working with to plan your engagement party, it also depends on how laid back or formal do you want your party to be.
CHOOSE THE VENUE
How big or small do you want your party to be? Yazz and I had a medium sized party at my parent’s house with 40 guests followed by a dinner at a very lovely local restaurant. My parents live in a nice house with a big garden that can be turned into a great space for parties. If you’re looking to save money, think about hosting your party at home! If you host the party in a place that is already under your disposal, you will be saving lots of cash since you won’t have to pay anything to rent out a venue or to pay for restaurant service.
Go paperless! The easiest and most practical way to invite people to your party is by emailing them an electronic version of the invitation (this was what we did!). It’s quicker, easier, cheaper and better for the environment! But if you’re old school and love traditional paper invitation cards, then consider DIY to make them more personal or print out a lovely design and send it to your invitees.
ENGAGEMENT PARTY DECORATIONS
Don’t think of the engagement party as a mini wedding, an engagement party must be much simpler. If you’re hosting your party in a home or a garden, consider hanging cute string lights, decorate tables with simple flower arrangements and candles. If you’re hosting a huge party at a fancy venue, you might want to consider speaking to a wedding planner to organise everything for you.
FOOD & DRINK
After deciding the venue, the number of guests and the type of the party, you will have to think about the food and drink. Are you going to serve dinner? What kind of drinks are you planning to serve? If you’re looking to save some money, consider hosting your party at non-meal time and offer some canapés and drinks instead at end the party with cake or dessert.
DECIDE TO REGISTER OR NOT
Remember that the wedding is yet to come, but if you’re expecting gifts at your engagement party then it’s preferred if you register at low to middle range of prices. If you don’t want gifts, just include a note in the invitation requesting the guests not to bring any gifts.
DECIDE WHAT TO WEAR
Is it an outdoor or an indoor party? Are you hosting it at home or in a hotel hall? How much money are you willing to spend on your dress/suit? There is no need to spend a fortune on a ball gown for your engagement party, unless you’re having a very formal party.
I got my dress custom made as I worked closely with a tailor to get the desired design, I also got the chance to pick the fabrics and colours and that was a part that I really enjoyed. Yazz ordered 2 different suits that he wore to the home party and the dinner. He ordered his suit online from DoBell where they sell everything that any man can possibly need when it comes to wedding/engagement wear. They offer designer quality tailored by them, and sell their products online only which means that they eliminate bricks-and-mortar expenses and pass these savings to their clients.
My sister Natalia, wore a stunning dress to the party that we got from Alie Street London. This dress is very beautiful and unique with its lace made from structured floral embroidered tulle fabric. Alie Street is one of our all time favourite dress stores and they offer very pretty designs, and the best quality (check them out for engagement dresses). I’ve worn a few of their dresses to many occasions and travels and really love their dresses. PS. Keep an eye on my Instagram account next month, I will be posting lots of wedding pictures and I can’t wait to show you my dress!
If you want to look 10lbs lighter and make sure that your dress looks perfect on you, then you need to check out Miraclesuit Shapewear that are available to order from Shapewear.co.uk. For maximum comfort and great look and feel, I wear my miracle suits to nights out, with special occasion wear and even day to day wear. I have one in nude and another in black, they’re comfortable, light in weight and I cannot recommend them enough.
JEWLERY AND ACCESSORIES
After we got engaged, Yazz got me a stunning diamond/white gold necklace and earrings that I wrote to my engagement party.
We also wore our Daniel Wellington watches that we really love (see picture below) to our engagement party. Think about the look that you want to go for and what would look good with your dress/suit.
Are you planning to wear a headpiece? Add a bit of sparkle to your look with Scünci occasion range. They make really cute engagement/bridal designs that will ensure that your look is as glamorous as ever! Their twinkling combs, slides and hairpins make it easy to create enviable hairstyles in an instant! Scünci products are available at Boots.
HAIR AND MAKEUP
Are you planning to get your hair and makeup professionally done? Or are you able to handle that on your own? If you have a friend who you know will be able to do your hair and make up really well, maybe ask them for a trial a week before your party and decide if it’s a good option to go with. I got my hair and make up professionally done on the day of the engagement party. However, in the pictures you see in this post I have done my hair and make up on my own as that was during the photoshoot one day before the party.
GLOW ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT PARTY
Make sure that your skin is hydrated, clean and glowing! Before my engagement party I started using 7th Heaven face masks on weekly basis and that really improved my skin. These crueltly free masks work like magic, they are so easy to use at home and give you instant results. My current favourite is this charcoal peel off mask, it deeply cleanses the skin and keeps it smooth.
FIND A PHOTOGRAPHER
We hired two different photographers for the party. The first one was the one that took most of the pictures that I’m sharing in this post – Tamara Photography. We wanted to make sure that we had lovely natural and romantic shots taken, and these pictures were taken one day before the engagement party to avoid unnecessary stress as we expected the engagement party day to be very busy. The second photographer came to the party and documented the event very well.
AFTER THE PARTY – CREATE A ENGAGEMENT PARTY ALBUM
After you receive all the engagement pictures from your photographer, and go through them on your laptop you will have to print out your favourite photos and put them together in an album. My favourite online photo printing service is Cheerz, we printed out a premium photo album with lay-flat opening pages with our most beautiful photos from the special day. Cheerz also have really cute and quirky ideas that you can check out, such as printing our your photos on heart shaped fridge magnets and even create a Wedding Decoration Box. I ordered one of these wedding decoration boxes with our photos that we have taken together since 2010, and plan on displaying them for our guests by the entrance on our wedding day.
DID YOU BESTFRIEND JUST GET ENAGAGED? HERE’S A GREAT GIFT IDEA
At Hanson & Hopewell you can find the cutest engagement/wedding gifts. I received this Sparkler ring selfie engagement gift box on the day of the engagement party, and I really loved it. Inside the box there’s everything that any bride will need to make sure their her ring and hands are picture ready, from skin balm and cuticle oil to jewel polish and a handmade ring dish.
Disclosure: I was gifted some of the items included in this post, but all opinions are my own. We included only items that we’ve personally tried and loved.
