This book is sweet inside out! It includes beautiful and colourful pictures of mouthwatering sweet recipes. The book is written by Susanna Booth to all sweet lovers out there! For the people who love to enjoy sweet treats but try to eat healthy and want to cut back on their daily sugar intake.
The solution, according to Susanna, is in having a balance: some sweetness, but not too much. Susanna urges her readers to eat a good variety of foods, lots of fiber and vitamins, and to eat in small portions.
Recipes in this book combine the natural sweetness of fruits and vegetables with whole grains, nuts and seeds. Yes, vegetables too! Examples of vegetables used in this book are: carrots, sweet potatoes and beetroot. I love the idea of veggie desserts, don’t you too?
However, the end result will be less sweet than what you are probably used to having so far. But you will get accustomed to this level of sweetness really quickly. In some recipes where a little extra sweetness is required, Susanna suggests that you use small quantities of stevia which is naturally derived and does not cause tooth decay, and has been in use as a sweetener in Japan and other Asian countries for decades. If using Stevia in large amounts, it will lead to a bitter taste. One of many useful tips that Susanne is giving to her readers in order to create sugar-free recipes is to dissolve stevia in liquid before adding it gradually to the rest of ingredients. With this you will end up adding very little of this sweetener.
Susanna included a useful two-page “Recipe Finder”, in which you can pick up the right recipe for you just by having a quick glance here. It also shows whether the recipe is dairy-free, gluten-free, contains no eggs, contains no nuts, vegetarian or vegan.
The book is divided into the following sections:
The Role of Sugar in the Diet
Simple Steps to Sugar-free Eating
Muffins, Cupcakes & Cookies
Cakes & Gateaux
Treats & Party Food
Sauces, Spreads & Other Basics
Many recipes include a useful variation box, in which Susanna suggests alternatives to the recipe and its ingredients.
Having two children myself, no surprise, my favourite part of the book is “For Children”. In this section I found many delicious and healthy recipes for snacks that I will be cooking and packing for my children to take with them to school and daycare as of next week!
I love this book and have never imagined that such sweets could be prepared without adding sugar! Even “Baklava” is sugar-free here! Sensationally Sugar-Free will definitely have its place on the bookshelf in my kitchen!
