Savage Salads is a wonderful recipe book by David Del Datto and Kristina Gustafsson that make the Savage Salads team. Savage Salads team believe that salads should taste amazing, look beautiful and leave you full! They believe that a salad should no longer be served just as a boring side next to a main, which is usually a sad mix of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and a few slices of a tasteless tomato.
Their mission is to prove that salads can be enticing, wholesome, filling and packed with protein. So David and Kristina now sell their inventive salads at their London stall in Soho, and keep people full from lunch until dinner. They have written this book packed with real salad meals, so a Savage Salad is not just a side, it’s actually a filling salad meal that can definitely be eaten as a main!
Looking at the book, the recipes are creative with many different flavour combinations. They use different grains, and usually add a source of protein such as red meat, chicken, fish, cheese, seeds and nuts! Most of the ingredients in the recipes are simple and so are the methods, which helps people create their own healthy and filling salads at home.
The book is arranged by season because the team at Savage Salads believe that ingredients should always be seasonal and fresh! There are 50 salad recipes in total (4 of them are “blitzed salads” or soups). My current favourite is a summer salad; marinated chicken, artichoke, grilled lemons and red quinoa. I also really want to try the grilled prawns, courgette ribbons, mango, chilli and grilled pitta. What I also like about the book, is that every single recipe comes with a wonderful picture, which really helps and encourages me as a reader to make the recipe at home!
There is also a “Dressings and dips” section at the end with total of 20 interesting dressings and dips recipes that make life much easier, especially for people like me who normally just go for the boring mayo dressing!
Savage Salads is published by Frances Lincoln, cover price £20.
